As times evolve, historical and cultural landscapes continue to emerge, yet the question of how to perceive and adopt appropriate measures for their preservation and transmission remains a perplexing one. This study synthesizes and analyzes various scholars perspectives on the choice between preserving original forms and embracing modernization, while debating these issues in the context of rural landscape preservation cases in China. The papers significant contribution lies in its emphasis on the uncertainties of memory and history, along with the inherent imperfection of landscape preservation. The challenge of preservation is not merely to determine what to protect or discard, but to maintain an openness to the past, ensuring that the present remains ephemeral rather than fixed. Furthermore, it calls for a deeper understanding of landscapes in cultural heritage work to ensure that their multidimensional values and cultural significance are thoroughly respected and preserved.
