We chose to submit our research to Cytoskeleton because it is a reputable journal whose focus fits well with our research on focal adhesions. Our lab studies the focal adhesion adapter proteins, Paxillin and Hic-5, and their roles in a variety of cellular functions including cell migration, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and centrosomal function. My project focuses on investigating the understudied role of Paxillin and Hic-5 in centrosome function. The centrosome is vital for proper cell division. Cancer cells often have abnormal centrosomes contributing to their increased proliferation and genetic instability. Our investigation into the roles of focal adhesion proteins at the centrosome will yield a deeper understanding of how focal adhesion proteins mediate centrosomal function to promote proper cell division. I was enamored with biology from a young age, amazed by the existence of tiny cells that you could not see by eye. However, I did not plan to pursue a career in research until I met my high school chemistry teacher, Ms. Hood. She taught me how to design experiments and helped me realize my passion for research. It is due to her influence, that I am a researcher today. Although Paxillin and Hic-5 are traditionally studied in terms of their function at focal adhesions, they are able to localize to additional structures outside of focal adhesions, including the centrosome and the nucleus. Investigating the additional functions of focal adhesion proteins at these other locations is a fascinating avenue of investigation, which will yield a deeper understanding of how focal adhesion proteins are involved with centrosome function, cell division, and gene expression. Outside of the lab, I enjoy doing parkour and mixing sound for live music. These hobbies have helped keep me motivated during the times when research does not work out as planned and have let me meet some amazing people who have been my support during my PhD journey.
