Eighth-Mode Cavity-Backed Antenna Using SIW Technology for Wireless Body Area Network
In this paper, a cavity-backed antenna operating at the eighth mode of its fundamental frequency is proposed employing substrate integrated waveguide technology, for the wireless body area network application. The eighth-mode concept is employed to reduce size by 1/8 times of its original size and make the antenna conformal while functioning close to the human body. The antenna operates at 2.4GHz ISM-band of frequency spectrum with a minimum SAR value of 0.0315W/kg for 1gm of tissue. The proposed antenna exhibits good impedance matching while loaded on body having minimum bandwidth of 48 MHz with a well-directed superior positive gain of 6.5dBi. This eighth-mode concept further conduces to reduce production cost and complexity. The effect of its ground plane was also examined in this paper and presented to specific absorption rate (SAR). The CST Microwave Studio was employed to carry out simulation.
