A Frequency Independent Excess Loss Modeling for Arbitrary Waveforms

A frequency independent excess loss modeling was explored to predict the excess loss accurately in electrical machine designs. Recent advanced machines such as an electric vehicle (EV) traction motors are operated in higher frequency than before. In the high-frequency range, the excess loss has a major impact and accurate prediction becomes important. Conventional prediction methods heavily rely on measurements. However, the measurements are difficult in the high-frequency region and cannot cover all possible operating conditions including minor loops. A model which is based on the classical Bertotti model and excludes the frequency dependency was proposed. The model’s parameters can be determined by measurements in measurable frequency range, and they can be used for arbitrary waveforms. The performances of several versions of the model were studied by comparing measurements. The results show that the frequency independent excess model is possible by introducing magnetic susceptibility.
