Grid-Connected Generating Unit with an Efficient Stabilization Mechanism

This article explores how H ∞ control can improve the stability and responsiveness of a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system. Controlling SMIB system is essential for stability maintenance, voltage and frequency regulation, load balancing, mitigation of disturbances, and optimization of system performances of power transmission and distribution networks. To solve these problems, H ∞ controller works against real-world uncertainty, resulting in a more robust controller for the SMIB system in this regard. Designing an H ∞ controller with altered weights will maximize system response. Also, it will effectively alleviate system disruptions and variations which are major factors in low-frequency oscillations of the system for the load deviations. To assess the proposed controller's dynamic behavior and enhance system stability, a single machine is inter-faced with an infinite bus. The SMIB system's parameters are specified, including damping coefficients, synchronous reactance, active power, reactive power, and other relevant variables. The system's stability is examined and a stability correction factor is introduced to enhance the representation of system dynamics. The SMIB system's state-space model is then developed in MAT-LAB to make controller design and simulation easier. Control performance is compared to conventional PID and LQR optimal control schemes. The results demonstrate that the suggested controller is robust across various operating circumstances over other experimental controllers.
