Nurse Educators’ Perception of Implementing Computerized Tests in the Korean Nurses Licensing Examination

Purpose: This study investigated nurse educators’ perception of implementing computerized tests for the Korean Nurses Licensing Examination. Methods: The descriptive study explored nurse educators’ perception of implementing computerized tests for the Korean Nurses Licensing Examination. An online survey was conducted between August and September 2023, with 297 nurse educators participating. Variables examined included perception of the current examination, experience with computerized tests, perception of computerized tests, and perception of the effects of implementing the computerized tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS version 29.0. Results: More than 80% of nurse educators agreed with implementing the computerized tests, and 59.9% responded that a computer-based test is appropriate. A total of 52.2% believed the number of items should be reduced. Regarding the examinees’ aspect, they agreed on simplifying preparation materials for the computerized test, increased concentration on the examination, the ability to clearly understand items, reduced errors due to filling out answer sheets, and decreased time required to take the examination. From the item writers’ aspect, they agreed on the ability to accurately assess the examinees’ knowledge, problem-solving skills, and clinical performance. Conclusion: Nurse educators’ perception of the computerized test implementation were positive. The computer-based test format was most favored, and the majority responded that reducing the number of items is necessary for a computerized test. Moreover, computerized tests can utilize multimedia-assisted items and offer various case-based items.
