Future-Proofing Exercise Physiology: We Have to Get Out of Our Own Way!

The discipline of exercise physiology sits at an inflection point, influenced by rapid technological advancements, shifting health paradigms, and an evolving job market demanding diverse and adaptable skill sets. The future of exercise physiology is dependent on the ability to adapt and transform, ensuring that professionals are equipped with the knowledge and practical experience necessary to thrive in the ever-changing health and performance sectors. However, in some cases, the existing educational models and emphases may be limiting the evolution of the students being produced. Outdated approaches, a disconnect between curricula and real-world demands, and resistance to change within academia all present very real challenges. In this paper, we explore barriers facing the evolution of the field of exercise physiology, discuss strategies to align educational programs with industry and health care needs, and propose a roadmap to future-proof the field. We argue that embracing technological integration, generational and societal evolution, specialization, and hands-on, real-world experience are essential to ensuring that exercise physiology remains a leader in health and performance science and application.
