Structural and functional features of Natalia Hurnytska's parcelates
The article reveals the features of parcelled constructions in Natalia Hurnytska's novel «Melody of Coffee in the Key of Cardamom». In particular, a comprehensive analysis of these constructions is carried out from the perspective of structure, semantics, and text-building capabilities. It is found that parceling in the author's discourse has become a distinctive expressive-syntactic device that contributes to the economy of linguistic means, allows emphasis on significant elements, and enhances linguistic expressiveness. The study provides a detailed characterization of all types of parcelates based on structure, while also exploring their role in the text. It is discovered that the majority of parcelates in Natalia Hurnytska's writing are parcelled predicates (47%), which is a defining feature of the author's idiolect, as other units are used far less frequently. Second in frequency are parcelled adverbials (12%), subordinate clauses of complex sentences (12%), and attributes (10%). The least used in the novel are subject-parcelates, object-parcelates, and parts of coordinate and asyndetic constructions (3-5% each). The article highlights the most important functions of parcelates in the text, including: characterizing (where a parcelate emphasizes certain characteristics of someone/something), meaning-making (highlighting significant information), emotive (conveying the emotions of the character in a particular life situation), and logical (containing justifications for certain actions, explanations of situations, etc.). The author of the article argues that parcelates helped the writer convey the full force of feelings and emotions, the inner speech, and the thoughts of the characters in the dramatic story of a secret love that blossomed in Lviv in the mid-19th century. Parcelates contributed to the linguistic conciseness of the narrator, accurate characterization of the figures, and the revelation of various relationships connected to the main sentence.
