Enhancement of Small Signal Power System Stability by Multiple Optimal Hydro Governors Damping Action
In present work optimal setting of hydro turbine governors has been proposed for enhancing small signal power system stability. Multi machine power system with multiple hydro turbine governors have been implemented to impart damping torque for variation in angular frequency subject to disturbances in power system. Step and discrete variations in wind generation being taken as disturbances in this work. The power system consists up two area four machine hydro alternators with wind penetrations. The gains of hydro turbine governors are tuned by multi objective MSSA (modified salp swarm algorithm). The variable wind penetrations impart variation in angular frequency of system and in proposed work, optimized multiple hydro governors simultaneously apply damping torque to system oscillations. Usually, hydro governors are employed to regulate frequency in automatic generations control loop of alternators but, optimal tuned hydro governors can also efficiently damp system oscillations to enhance small signal stability of power system as presented in this work. The optimization capability of MSSA algorithm has also been compared with PSO and SSA algorithm.
