Phase-Shift DC-DC Converter-Based Electrical Vehicle Charging with Power Factor Correction

Electric vehicles are recently coming onto the market to reduce the greenhouse effect and save on fossil fuels. Electric vehicle (EV) chargers are one of the main components of the development of EVs. This paper presents a level 2 on-board single-phase fast charger suitable for 48 V, 150 Ah batteries in two and three-wheeler short-range mobility vehicles. The charger comprises a boost power factor correction (PFC) to convert the AC grid voltage into 400V DC and a unidirectional phase shift full bridge (PSFB) isolated converter to control battery voltage and current. A phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PWM) control technique controls the PSFB switches for charging the battery in constant current and voltage (CC-CV) modes. During charging for battery state of charge (SOCs) below 80%, constant current (CC) mode is preferred, whereas for SOCs above 80%, constant voltage (CV) mode is preferred. Using a PSFB converter minimizes problems like high switching loss, low efficiency, high noise, and the use of an extra snubber circuit. This charger has a high efficiency of 92.04% compared to conventional chargers and a lower total harmonic distortion (THD) of 4.84%. The simulation result of the proposed EV charger is accomplished using MATLAB/Simulink.
