An Accurate Single-Ended Fault Location Technique for MVDC Networks via a Voltage Phase Shift Slope in High Frequency Line-Mode

This paper presents a precise single-ended fault location approach for multi-terminal medium voltage direct current (MT-MVDC) networks. The scheme is based on analyzing the phase shift slope over distance of the high frequency contents of the line-mode voltage signal. Traditional fault location methods often attempt to detect the arrival time of traveling waves and rely solely on the dominant frequency velocity. These approaches can lead to inaccuracies, especially in scenarios involving low sampling frequency and fault resistance attenuation. The proposed methodology circumvents these limitations by analyzing the phase constant β across the high frequency component of the line-mode voltage signal. Through rigorous analysis, a robust correlation between the phase shift and fault location is established, enabling the formulation of a linear equation for fault localization. This approach significantly improves fault location accuracy, thereby providing a more comprehensive and reliable solution for fault detection and localization in MT-MVDC networks. The fault scenario is simulated via the PSCAD/EMTDC platform, with a particular emphasis on an MT-MVDC network, whereas MATLAB is utilized for signal processing and algorithmic development.
