Life Cycle Assessment of Formic Acid as a Liquid Hydrogen Carrier
This study indicates that catalytic dehydrogenation would only be favorable in unique cases that incorporate renewable electricity. Electricity makes up over 95% of hydrogen Global Warming Potential (GWP). Renewable electricity reduces GWP by 80-90%. Pipeline length influences GWP: steel production emissions dominate for shorter (<100 miles) lengths and compression electricity emissions for longer lengths.
