Practical aspects of ensuring of the metrological traceability

Metrological traceability is one of the key principles of metrology, which determines the ability of measurements to be related to relevant measurement standards. It ensures reliability, objectivity and comparability of measurements, which is critical for many fields of science and technology. The concept of metrological traceability is important for practical application, as it allows comparing the accuracy of measurements by calibrating standards and measuring instruments. Calibration laboratories must ensure metrological traceability through a documented continuous calibration chain. Different metrological traceability chains lead to different measurement uncertainties. A partial conceptual diagram for the terminological subsystem “metrological traceability” is presented which has relationships with some basic concepts of metrology. A generalized metrological traceability chain model for different levels of the calibration hierarchy is proposed, which can be used to construct corresponding chains for specific measurement areas. Recommendations for the practical application of the developed model of the metrological traceability chain are considered.
