Regenerative Energy Control on a Batteryless Crab Fishing Vessel with SG/M

Currently, regulations in the maritime sector aimed at promoting energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable operations are steering ship manufacturers towards alternative equipment. In this context, renewable energy, battery systems, and shaft generator/motor integration are becoming increasingly popular in ship configurations, while alternative energy-efficient operational approaches are also being developed. One such approach is the use of electric winch systems, where regenerative energy production and the flow of this energy between equipment must be carefully considered according to the operational profile. This study presents a regenerative energy flow control system for a crab fishing vessel. The powertrain includes the main engine, shaft generator/motor (SG/M), common DC bus, AC bus, winches, thrusters, and diesel generators. The fishing vessel, configured without batteries, incorporates a regenerative energy flow management system, which operates based on constraint conditions that optimize the flow of regenerative energy generated by the winches in addition to the basic power flow scenarios managed by the power management system.
