Histopathological And Autopsy Analysis Of Fatal Poisoning Cases: Correlating Clinical Symptoms And Gross Findings In A Tertiary Healthcare Setting
Background: Poisoning is one of the most important public health issues, particularly in the lower-middle-class population. Acute poisoning from toxic substances such as organophosphorus compounds is highly prevalent. The pathophysiological effects and survival trends following acute poisoning incidents need to be understood for effective intervention.Materials and Methodology: This is a retrospective analysis of poisoning cases at a tertiary care centre in Maharashtra, India. The data included clinical symptoms, histopathological findings of gastric mucosa, and survival outcomes of patients presenting with various poisonings. Results: High death toll was recorded in which almost 50% died at arrival. Organo phosphorus and corrosive poisoning caused extreme intestinal injury as gastric congestion and necrosis were seen. Histopathological proof proved tissue injury due to toxins with individual characteristics. There is association of poverty indices and an increased number of cases. Regulations are required. Conclusion: This study underscores the urgent need for improved public health strategies to manage and prevent poisoning cases. Effective regulation of hazardous substances and enhanced access to healthcare resources are essential to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with poisonings.
