Method to Optimize the Number of Submodules of a Cascaded Multilevel Converter for an EV's Powertrain Based on Power Losses Analysis

This paper presents a criterion to address the optimization problem of finding the optimal number of submodules of a cascaded multilevel inverter for an Electric Vehicle's (EV) powertrain application. It describes how to calculate the overall power losses of a cascaded H-Bridge topology depending on an arbitrary number <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$N$</tex> of submodules under phase shift modulation. The method is based on a theoretical analysis of the power circuit with a generic power switching device. Then, further analysis is developed where a MOSFET is specifically chosen as the switching device. Moreover, a simulation environment using PLECS is used to verify the results obtained. An optimal number of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$N=\{3,4\}$</tex> submodules per phase for which power losses are greatly reduced is obtained.
