A study on the hill climbing performance of trucks based on Trucksim for heavy-duty trucks

Based on Trucksim simulation software, this paper investigates the hill climbing performance of heavy-duty trucks, focusing on analyzing the factors affecting the equilibrium speed of trucks at different gradients and slope lengths. With the rapid development of China's road freight industry, the number of trucks and freight volume have increased dramatically, resulting in the power performance of heavy-duty trucks when climbing slopes is particularly prominent. Insufficient climbing power not only affects the road capacity, but also may cause traffic accidents. Therefore, this paper investigates the change rule of truck speed under different initial speeds and gradients by establishing a simulation environment, and then explores the influencing factors of equilibrium speed. The study firstly used Trucksim software to simulate the climbing process of a six-axle truck, set different initial speeds and gradients, and analyzed the speed change of the vehicle under different gradients. The results of the study show that the truck eventually reaches an equilibrium speed regardless of the initial speed, and the magnitude of the equilibrium speed is inversely proportional to the gradient. In addition, the greater the slope, the smaller the equilibrium speed of the vehicle and the shorter the equilibrium slope length. The accuracy and reliability of the data is ensured by smoothing the simulation data using the Savitzky-Golay (S-G) filtering method. The conclusion section states that the results of this paper provide a theoretical basis for the design of highway longitudinal slopes and can be used to supplement existing road design codes. In addition, it is shown that the equilibrium speed and slope length are fixed when the truck's power performance is certain, while further research can explore the effects of other power configurations on the equilibrium speed and slope length.
