Ouyang Yuqian's A Puppet's Family's Localised Rewriting of Ibsen's A Doll's House
The paper examines Ouyang Yuqian's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House during the May Fourth movement, where he translated it as A Puppet's Family in 1925. He retained the original plot and ideas but incorporated Chinese elements, presenting the protagonist Huo Yilan as a complex character caught between traditional and modern values. This portrayal contrasts with earlier translations by Hu Shih and Luo Jialun, which depicted Nora more straightforwardly. Ouyang's adaptation was influenced by his personal experiences, the elite's stereotypical views of Nora, and his desire to re-evaluate the "new woman" archetype.
