Elderly Scamming and its relationship with face culture in China

This research closely examines the prevailing problem of elderly scamming in China by looking at the cultural background of Chinese society. After several case studies and interviews, the study reveals the power of “face” culture, a unique culture of social prestige and pride in China. It shows how the long-established societal respect for elders, much greater than in any other countries in the world, has conflicted with the rapid advancement of Chinese society. With the emergence of the internet and information technologies, elders are losing their places in society, so taking advantage of transactions has become their way to prove their ability to contribute to their own families. However, these risky purchases or transactions often lead the elders to scams. More importantly, the influence of “face” can cause subsequent financial damages.
