Addressing the Pandemic of Depression and Anxiety Among Young People Through Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes

Depression and anxiety among young people have reached unprecedented levels globally, with significant numbers of children and young adults affected. In China, young people under 18 make up a considerable portion of those suffering from depression. Various lifestyle factors, including sleep, diet, exercise, light exposure, social interaction, and anti-rumination, play critical roles in this mental health crisis. The fast-paced, sleep-deprived, and socially isolated nature of modern life is a significant contributor to mental illness. Improving sleep patterns, increasing Omega-3 intake, engaging in regular physical activity, getting exposure to natural light, and fostering face-to-face social interactions are essential aspects of addressing this issue. Moreover, excessive social media use and rumination further contribute to low self-esteem and mental health challenges in young people. By adopting therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC), individuals can significantly reduce depressive symptoms and combat the mental health pandemic affecting today’s youth.
