A study on the dialectical relationship between parental authority and autonomy
This paper explores children's obligation to abide by parental authority by exploring the difference between guidelines and rules in family and legal contexts, citing the example of whether a child should go to bed at 11 p.m. and analyzing the understanding of the delicate role between authority and autonomy. While the authority of parents over their children from a legal point of view is recognized and upheld to varying degrees in different jurisdictions, it should be noted that authority and autonomy are not a matter of choice, both in the management of children and in the perception of the law. The legitimacy of parental authority should be based on reason and rules. By maintaining a balance between authority and autonomy, parents can not only effectively guide their children toward autonomous and responsible growth but also fulfill their role as supervisors and guides.
