Generation of triangular pulse trains in normal-dispersion photonic crystal microresonators

We numerically demonstrate a novel regime for generation of coherent pulse trains in a normal-dispersion photonic crystal microresonator. The results show that, if one pumps not a split mode but the neighboring one, it is possible to excite either a single wide triangular-shaped pulse or a periodic sequence of them, depending on the spectral interval between pumped and split modes, with a low pump threshold and high pump-to-comb conversion efficiency. Properties of the generated signals are studied, and excitation conditions are revealed. It is found that nonlinear coupling of counterpropagating waves significantly affects the conditions and dynamics of the generation process.
