The Impact of Relationships between Elderly Households and Their Children on the Intention to Bequeath Real Estate Assets by Region
This study analyzed whether there were regional differences in the influence of real estate assets and satisfaction with children on the inheritance intention of elderly households by dividing them into metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, cities and rural areas, using survey data on the elderly. As a result, in the case of metropolitan areas, the intention to inherit was found to be approximately 5 times higher in cases with real estate assets than in cases without real estate assets, but in non-metropolitan areas, real estate assets had no significant influence. In non-metropolitan areas, children and satisfaction had a significant effect on the intention to inherit, but in the metropolitan area, it was not significant, but it was found that being ignored as an elderly person in family relationships lowered the intention to inherit. The results of the division into urban and rural areas showed that in urban areas, the intention to inherit was 2.455 times higher in those with real estate assets than in those without, and satisfaction with children increased the intention to inherit by 1.22 times. On the other hand, in rural areas, the influence of real estate assets was not significant, but unlike in urban areas, if there were other assets, the intention to inherit was 1.867 times higher than if there were no assets, and if there was an experience of being ignored as an elderly person, the intention to inherit was 0.572 times higher than if there were no other assets. It was found to have a low effect on inheritance. Even in rural areas, satisfaction with children increased inheritance intention by 1.432 times.
