The Impact of Early Image Viewing on the Cognitive Productivity and Creativity of the Conceptual Design Stage

Objective: This study explores how viewing precedent images at the early stages of design impacts architects' cognitive productivity and creativity. Theoretical Framework: The research draws on cognitive theories of design, focusing on how external stimuli, such as precedent images, shape cognitive actions during the ideation process. Method: A controlled design experiment was conducted with six experienced architects designing a bus shelter. Participants were randomly assigned to an investigational group, given images of existing bus shelters, or a control group, with no visual aids. The design process was analyzed using protocol analysis, and data were coded according to a cognitive-oriented framework. Results and Discussion: Results show that early exposure to precedent images positively influences ideation. Architects in the experimental group exhibited significantly higher levels of: - Cognitive Productivity: Generating a greater variety and number of new cognitive actions. - Cognitive Creativity: Producing original, unconventional cognitive action chains that deviate from standard practices. - Cognitive Consistency: Demonstrating more structured and homogeneous cognitive action chains, leading to a more organized and more operative design process. These findings underscore the value of precedent images in fostering idea generation, enhancing connections between thoughts, and supporting the development of innovative concepts. As a visual reference, precedent images aid in structuring cognitive processes and encourage the integration of existing ideas into novel solutions. Research Implications: These results have practical implications for architectural practice and education, highlighting the importance of visual tools in the early stages of design to boost productivity, creativity, and the formulation of groundbreaking solutions. Originality/Value: The research provides new insights into the cognitive impacts of visual stimuli on the architectural design process.
