Frequency Analysis of Electrical Impedance Tomography for Peripheral Nerve Activity Recording
Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) offers promising technology for locating neural activity in peripheral nerves with high spatial resolution. However, challenges arise due to the extreme physiological dimensions, making signal measurement difficult and emphasizing the need for optimized experimental setups. This paper presents a multi-level timefrequency computational analysis for determining an appropriate frequency range for EIT. While single cell study shows that myelinated axons impedance shifts can be adequately measured, those of unmyelinated fibres are too rapid for accurate measurement. We propose a finite element model to simulate tissue properties and enable the recording of group activity, including compound action potentials, in unmyelinated fibre bundles and show that such activity can be measured at a frequency range of 10 kHz to 30 kHz. Future work aims to address current limitations and enhance computational efficiency for practical EIT applications in the peripheral nervous system.
