One of the New Actors of Turkish Agriculture: Avocado (Persea americana Mill.)
Türkiye constitutes one of the most advantageous and special regions of the world in terms of agriculture due to its location and geographical conditions. Türkiye’s cropping pattern has diversified considerably over the years through variety development and demonstration activities for new crops. Guava, lime, shadok (pomelo), passion fruit (passiflora), stevia, mango, pepino, golden strawberry, quinoa and many more agricultural products have started to gain a place in Türkiye’s agricultural life. Avocado (Persea americana Mill.), which is the subject of our study, is one of the agricultural products that can be evaluated in this context. Avocado has shown a very serious development and attracted attention in Türkiye, especially in recent years, with the selection of ideal varieties and increasing experience in this field. This agricultural activity, which is concentrated in a few districts along the coastal belt of the Mediterranean Region in our country, should be planned and handled very sensitively. The fact that avocado provides a very high profit to its producers and that the demand for avocado is increasing due to its effects on human health indicate that there will be very serious developments in this field. In this study, avocado, which has attracted attention in Türkiye in recent years, was analyzed from the perspective of agricultural geography. In addition to the geographical distribution, production and trade of avocado cultivation in Türkiye, the history and global status of avocado agriculture are also mentioned.
