Dîvânu Lugâtî’t-Türk’te Erkek ile İlgili Söz Varlığının Toplum Dilbilimsel Açıdan İncelenmesi
Language and society are in a relationship that mutually affects each other. For this reason, changes and developments in society are directly reflected in language. The field of study of sociolinguistics is basically these mutual relations between language and society. Vocabulary is the most concrete and changeable source of this field of study in terms of language. Written by Mahmud of Kashgar in the 11th century to teach Turkish to Arabs, Divanu Lugâti’t-Türk, which is actually a dictionary, is among the most important works that reveal Turkish culture in terms of reflecting the lifestyle of the period in which it was written and its rich vocabulary. In this study, the vocabulary related to men, which is a part of our culture and is included in the basic vocabulary, was analyzed and determined in Divanu Lugâti’t-Türk. The vocabulary and meaning areas preferred when talking about men, who are generally always one step ahead of women in society, were preferred not only because they are indicators of the perception towards men, but also because they are indicators of gender. An attempt was made to determine the social roles and values attributed to men through the concept of man and the vocabulary related to men, and it was aimed to determine how the concept of man was perceived in Turkish social life at that time.
