The era of "gin madness" in England in the first half of the XVIII century
The article examines the phenomenon of "gin madness" in the history of England in the first half of the XVIII century. The search for a way to fill the budget, primarily for waging war on the continent, prompted the government of William III of Orange to adopt a number of legislative acts that contribute to the growth of the number of distillers. Tax incentives for the production of alcohol from English raw materials stimulated distillers to mass-produce gin. The simplicity and cheapness of gin production made it a popular drink among residents of London at the beginning of the XVIII century. The increase in the number of crimes and poverty by contemporaries was associated with the popularity of gin, primarily among poor Londoners. Educators and "fighters" for morality have been paying attention to the danger of gin drinking for 50 years. The author focused on the legislative acts regulating the production and sale of gin in the context of their public dis cussion, and showed how diverse social groups reacted to the increase in crime and poverty as part of the di s cussion of the aggravated problem of drunkenness. Special attention is paid to the point of view of Daniel Defoe as an observer and critic of "ginomania". The article shows that the "gin madness" was not only a social prob lem, but also became the subject of political debate and caused a public outcry. In conclusion, the author con cludes that "ginomania" was a marker of profound changes in English society, on the one hand, it was set by the rapid development of market relations, on the other hand, the increase in acute social problems in England in the first half of the XVIII century.
