The functions of the "gaze" in Raymond Carver's short stories

The relevance of this article, devoted to understanding the Lacanian concepts of the gaze and the eye based on the stories of the American writer Raymond Carver, is due to two factors. Firstly, Carver's work is almost not considered by domestic literary critics, despite his popularity among both American readers and critics and researchers. Secondly, the methodologies developed by the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan are in great demand in the discourses of art in general and literature in particular, because they allow us to comprehend each aesthetic practice separately and at the junction of their ontological and epistemological in tersection. The purpose of the article is to analyze the "gaze" in Carver's stories "The Idea", "I Could See the Smallest Things" and "How About This?". The methodological basis of the work is Lacan's theories related to the concepts of gaze and eye, which were developed in the works of Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek. The results of the study are presented in the disclosure of the functions and connotations of the "gaze" in Carver's stories. On the one hand, the analysis showed that Carver uses the "gaze" arbitrarily, without tying it to a single stable value. The author adapts the concept to various diegetic situations, thereby enhancing its artistic and herme neutic potential. On the other hand, in Carver's stories, "gaze" becomes a place of embodiment of metaprosaic ideas related to the positions of the reader (including the viewer, the observer) and the writer, more broadly – the interpreter and the creator. The results obtained can be applied both in the field of further research on Carver's work and in the field of interpretation of other literary texts.
