Reports of military agent A. P. Gorlov on the US Armed Forces in 1871–1872
In the current complex geopolitical situation, coupled with the aggravation of relations be tween Russia and foreign countries, issues related to addressing the evolution of their foreign policy interaction in the past are becoming especially relevant. And one of the most important places in this context is occupied by the history of Russian intelligence in general and the activities of the so-called "diplomats in uniform", or mili tary agents, in particular. The purpose of this article is to analyze the activities of the first official Russian mili tary agent in the United States, Major General A. P. Gorlov and his reports on the American armed forces, which he delivered to the Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Empire in 1871–1872. The novelty of the re search lies in the introduction into scientific circulation of a wide range of previously unpublished documents of the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RSMHA). The research methodology is based on the principles of objectivity and historicism, as well as the use of chronological and comparative historical methods. In the re ports, the military agent provides a list of military districts and divisions of the United States, the total number of officers and soldiers of the lower level of the regular land army, its functions and acquisition of small arms . The composition of the US navy, the number of squadrons, the condition and armament of ships and coastal fortifications along the Gulf of Mexico are highlighted. Estimates of the functioning of the military and maritime ministries are given, as well as forecasts for the development of the army and navy as a whole. The author con cludes that Major General A. P. Gorlov was a professional in his field, whose reports demonstrate the high quali ty of the work of a Russian military agent in the United States and the general level of intelligence of the Russian Empire in the second half of the XIX century. The results of the research can be used to compile textbooks and scientific papers on similar topics.
