Enhancement of Composite Materials Using 3D Printing Technology

With the development of 3D printed composite materials the methods of increasing their mechanical and thermal performance, functionality and properties has become more diverse. Specifically, the focus of this research is on methods of improving the performance of the composite materials through the alteration of the 3D printing parameters including part thickness, fiber direction and density of layers. Continuous fiber reinforcements and hybrid materials have been discussed to overcome issues with anisotropy and the variation of reinforcements density. The findings highlighted here include enhanced tensile strength, thermal stability and the weight-to-strength ratios making the product suitable for aerospace, automotive and health care industries. Challenges such as length scales and dispersion of reinforcements are presented, followed by prospects for further studies in terms of developing multifunctional composites and mass production.
