Metrological validation of the UNREAL gaming engine for type testing of traffic monitoring devices
The output from the CARLA traffic simulation environment, based on the UNREAL video-game engine, can be used to feed simulated sensor data into a commercial speed enforcement device. This could be employed in the type approval of traffic measurement devices, by comparing the speed determined by the device under test with the speed used as an input parameter to the simulation. Before this can be applied to actual type testing, the system must be validated. In particular, its metrological traceability must be established. Here we describe our steps towards a metrological validation of the CARLA/UNREAL simulation system regarding the correctness of distances and speed as given by a simulated laser scanner (lidar) device.
