Integration of refugees: The role of networks in facilitating the social integration of refugees
The social integration of refugees in the Netherlands is a multifaceted social issue that is significantly centered on the effectiveness of various networks. The study explores how formal (institutional) and informal (family and community-based) networks influence the social integration of refugees in the Netherlands. Employing a mixed-method approach, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were administered to refugees in the study areas. The study findings showed that these networks played significant roles in providing social, emotional, and psychological support, access to resources, and social contact. Yet, challenges like cultural differences, language barriers, and discrimination persist. The study findings present feasible recommendations that include enhanced language programs, counselling services, and targeted policy interventions.
