The Therapeutic Potential of Melittin, the Main Component of Bee Venom: From Inflammation to Cancer Treatment

Bee venom is a complex mixture of peptides and enzymes, with melittin being the main component, which has been shown to have various therapeutic applications. This review article aims to summarize the current state of knowledge on the therapeutic potential of melittin, particularly in inflammation and cancer. Inflammation is a common pathological feature of many diseases, and melittin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects through multiple mechanisms, including inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and activation of anti-inflammatory signaling pathways. Preclinical and clinical studies have also demonstrated the efficacy of melittin in reducing inflammation in various disease models. Cancer is another major disease that remains a significant challenge to treat. Melittin has been shown to have anti-cancer effects by inhibiting cell growth and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that melittin is effective in killing breast cancer cells, and preclinical studies have shown potential for melittin in treating other types of cancer, such as prostate, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer. Melittin has also been shown to enhance the effects of chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation therapy in cancer treatment. While melittin-based therapies hold great promise, there are also safety and toxicity considerations. Adverse effects of bee venom and melittin have been reported, and strategies for reducing toxicity and enhancing safety are being investigated. In summary, the therapeutic potential of melittin in inflammation and cancer is a promising area of research, and further studies are warranted to fully explore its potential in treating various diseases.
