Prevalence And Risk Factors for Osteoporosis in The Elderly: A Study Using the Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument (Orai)
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone strength, posing significant health challenges among the elderly. This study evaluates the risk of osteoporosis in an elderly population using the Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument (ORAI).Conducted as a cross-sectional analysis, participants were stratified into risk categories based on age, weight, and estrogen use.Findings revealed a high prevalence of moderate to high-risk categories, emphasizing the importance of targeted preventive strategies.Statistical analysis highlights key demographic and lifestyle factors influencing risk. The results underscore the utility of ORAI as an effective, low-cost screening tool.AIMS: To assess the risk of osteoporosis among the elderly population using the Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument (ORAI) and identify demographic and lifestyle factors influencing osteoporosis risk. METHODS AND TOOLS:The study employed a cross-sectional design involving elderly individuals aged 60 years and above. The Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument (ORAI) was used to categorize participants into low, moderate, and high-risk groups based on age, weight, and estrogen use.Data collection included demographic and lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and exposure to sunlight.Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics to calculate the prevalence of osteoporosis risk and inferential statistics, including chi-square tests and logistic regression, to identify key factors associated with osteoporosis risk in the study population.RESULTS: A significant proportion of participants were categorized as being at moderate to high risk for osteoporosis.Demographic factors such as age and gender showed a strong association with increased risk, highlighting the vulnerability of specific groups within the elderly population.Additionally, lifestyle variables, including inadequate physical activity and limited exposure to sunlight, emerged as significant contributors to osteoporosis risk. The Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument (ORAI) demonstrated high sensitivity in effectively stratifying participants based on their risk levels, reinforcing its utility as a reliable and practical screening tool for early identification of osteoporosis risk. CONCLUSION:The study highlights a high prevalence of osteoporosis risk among the elderly population, emphasizing the need for early screening and preventive strategies.ORAI proves to be a practical and cost-effective tool for identifying at-risk individuals.Future efforts should focus on implementing tailored interventions, such as promoting physical activity, ensuring adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, and raising awareness about osteoporosis prevention in elderly populations.
