Quality improvement in resistance spot welding of H1000 austenitic stainless steel using an external magnetic field
H1000 steel represents a novel nickel-free austenitic stainless steel. While it is compatible with resistance spot welding, weld defects compromise its structural integrity. Magnetic-assisted resistance spot welding (MA-RSW) has proven effective in enhancing weld quality for advanced high-strength steels. However, the underlying mechanism of magnetic fields on H1000 steel remains unclear. To fill in this gap, this study applied MA-RSW and RSW to H1000 steels for a systematic comparison. The findings revealed that MA-RSW enhances the weld tensile shear strength of H1000 steel by 10.5% due to two factors: firstly, the nugget diameter expands as magnetic force drives molten metal to scour the nugget's edge; secondly, electromagnetic stirring decreases the nugget's critical diameter by minimising defects and refining grain structure within the nugget.
