Characteristic Simulation and Numerical Investigation of Membrane Electrode Assembly Thickness in a PEMFC
Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy with high efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Various factors, including membrane thickness, influence the performance of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). This simulation study investigates the effect of membrane thickness on the performance characteristics of PEMFCs using computational modeling. A mathematical model of a PEMFC incorporating different membrane thicknesses is developed and simulated under various operating conditions. Key performance metrics such as power output, voltage efficiency, and current density are analyzed and compared for different membrane thicknesses. The results indicate that membrane thickness significantly impacts fuel cell performance, with thinner membranes generally exhibiting higher power output but potentially reduced durability. This study provides insights into optimizing membrane design for enhanced PEMFC performance, balancing between power output and long-term stability. Future research directions are also discussed for improving fuel cell efficiency through membrane thickness optimization.
