Effect of low surface energy material deposition on the wettability and corrosion resistance characteristics of a copper substrate

Surfaces that exhibit excellent anti-wetting properties and have water contact angle (WCA) in excess of 150° are termed superhydrophobic surfaces. In this study, a superhydrophobic zinc myristate surface was fabricated on a copper substrate via electrodeposition. SEM analysis of the samples demonstrated the existence of a multiscale surface topography. The WCA on the coated surface was measured to evaluate the degree of superhydrophobicity. The study of corrosion inhibition characteristics of zinc myristate coatings with different immersion times is reported for the first time through Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests. A maximum contact angle of 156.6° was observed, and the coating exhibited corrosion inhibition with 98.64% efficiency and polarization resistance of 944.193 kΩcm−2. The value of film resistance for the coated sample varied from 125.721 ± 0.5 kΩ/cm2 to 105.54 ± 0.4 kΩ/cm2 for the immersion period when varied from 1 to 480 h, which shows the durability of the coating under adverse condition.
