Are Space Division Multiplexing Field-Deployed Fibers Useful just for Plain Data Transmission?

Multicore and multimode fibers have already demonstrated to enable high-throughput data transmission. Provided some measures both fiber types can support also network routing based on the space domain. However, space division multiplexing can be used also for enhancing fiber sensing performance of deployed fibers.

Abstract

Multicore and multimode fibers have already demonstrated to enable high-throughput data transmission. Provided some measures both fiber types can support also network routing based on the space domain. However, space division multiplexing can be used also for enhancing fiber sensing performance of deployed fibers.
