Generating Captions for Images through Deep Learning Methods

In recent years, there has been rapid development in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a particular focus on image captioning, which has garnered significant interest among scientists. This field involves automatically generating “natural language descriptions based on the objects identified within an image”, contributing to the broader context of scene understanding. This study conducts image caption generation using “deep learning techniques”. The study uses Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). “The image features are extracted from VGG16. The system is evaluated using two measures: Bilingual Evaluation Understudy (BLEU) and Metric for Evaluation of Translation with Explicit Ordering (METEOR). For BLEU-1, with 20 epochs, a value of 0.536 indicates that approximately 53.6% of the unigrams in the generated captions match those in the reference captions on average.
