A Reconfigurable Piezoelectric Actuator With Asymmetric Rhomboid Drive Module

Developing a multimode piezoelectric actuator that is compatible with ultrasonic, inchworm, and inertial driving mechanisms to achieve macroscopic and microscopic movements is a crucial challenge. This study employed a reconfigurable strategy to create a piezoelectric driving module (PDM) with Asymmetric Rhomboid structure. By combining different numbers of PDMs, three driving modes can be achieved. This work focused on analyzing the design concept and achievable deformation modes of the PDM. Detailed descriptions were provided for the working principles and implementation strategies of the proposed three driving modes. Finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to simulate and validate the modal, static, and transient characteristics of the PDMs, confirming the feasibility of all three driving schemes. Finally, a prototype was constructed, and an experimental setup was established to assess the output characteristics of each driving mode. The application of reconfigurable design concepts in piezoelectric actuators is beneficial for the development of design innovations and the emergence of functions and motion modes.
