Specifics of the redox processes in natural aquatic systems
Redox processes in the aquatic environment were studied, and the mechanisms of chemical reactions with the involvement oxidizing agents in the presence of transition metal ions and complexes have been explained. This paper summarizes research data with special focus on the redox chemical processes with the involvement of oxidative species including free radicals, and transition valence metal ions. It is mentioned, that in the redox processes in natural water bodies formation of free radicals or/and complex compounds with partial charge transfer takes place. This view includes a discussion on the phenomenon of aggressive free radicals’ generation that may “kill” biota, rather than destroying pollutants, and why the intermediate particles resulting from chemical and biochemical processes act much softer.
