IoT LoRaWAN Chipless RFID Reader based on SDR and Blind Detection Technique
Main objective of this paper is to introduce a novel and cost effective IoT Chipless RFID reader for long range applications based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) and enhanced blind detection technique. The proposed smart reader is connected to the The Things Network (TTN) cloud of Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) devices. A LoRa backhaul is embedded in the GNU Radio program of the reader following the tag detection stage. Blind detection technique is applied using Frequency Hopping and Sweeping (FHS) algorithm for the Frequncy Coded (FC) Chipless RFID tag detection within the bandwidth from 1.2-5.4 GHz. After tag detection, the data will be directly sent using LoRa Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) modulation at 868 MHz to a standard self-developed LoRa relay which can forward the detected tag ID to the TTN application server through the LoRaWAN gateway. The IoT LoRa Chipless RFID reader prototype is properly implemented and connected with the IoT TTN. This enables the Chipless RFID tags to be integrated in the IoT LoRaWAN networks for wireless long range applications up to several kilometers.
