Improving Sensitivity And Selectivity of Breast Cancer Detection Systems Through the Development of a High-Performance LNA

This paper describes the development of a planar low-noise amplifier (LNA) using InGaAs-HEMT technology, which is compact and features a high figure of merit, intended for breast cancer detection systems. A resistive termination topology was chosen, combined with a cascade configuration, offering perfect input-output matching over a frequency range of 1.87 to 3.5 GHz. This frequency band is used for detecting smaller tumors. The designed amplifier provides an average S<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">21</inf> gain of 27.66 dB with low ripple of 1.23 dB, a noise figure (NF) ranging from 2.02 dB to 2.56 dB, perfect isolation of 54.96 dB, and a compact size of 31 x 22.6 mm2. The LNA also exhibits a group delay (GD) of (0.461 ± 0.103) ns, a fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 60.7 %, and a figure of merit (FOM) of 174. The linearity of the amplifier was also studied, showing an average input compression point IP<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">1dB</inf> of - 12.52 dBm and a third-order input intercept point (IIP3) of 10 dBm. These performances enhance the selectivity and sensitivity of cancer detection systems.
