Power Oscillations Damping Controller for a M-SSSC FACTS Device: the SmartValve™ case
To meet the evolving demands of the transmission system, it is crucial to augment its transport capacity. However, financial limitations often make the expansion of power systems unfeasible. Instead, leveraging Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) can effectively increase capacity while providing essential flexibility to the system. Beyond their core function of controlling power flow, FACTS can also be employed to reduce power oscillations. This paper investigates the integration of a Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controller within a modular Static Synchronous Series Compensator (M-SSSC). The main goal of this controller is to rapidly decrease the amplitude and settling time of inter-area oscillations, thereby improving system stability. Time-domain simulations performed using the PSCAD software confirm the controller’s effectiveness in damping inter-area oscillations. The findings indicate that integrating a POD controller into an M-SSSC significantly mitigates oscillations and maintains low peak values.
