Hands-on Experiential Learning of Machine Learning Concepts Through Senior Design Projects: A Case Study
Introducing machine learning (ML) concepts to undergraduate electrical engineering students through senior design projects is a practical and effective method for hands-on learning. This approach enables students to apply AI/ML techniques to real-world engineering challenges, helping them gain valuable interdisciplinary skills and preparing them for the increasing demand for ML expertise in the industry. Senior design projects offer an informal way to introduce AI/ML without needing a dedicated course, fostering problem-solving abilities and enhancing career readiness. This paper presents a case study of teaching ML concepts through their application in senior design projects in the electrical engineering department at Prince Mohammad University, Saudi Arabia. This strategy ensures that students graduate with the essential ML skills needed to thrive in the evolving technological landscape. Results from a student survey illustrates the pros and cons of this approach and it highlights several key insights relevant to this case study, showcasing the positive impact of integrating AI/ML projects into the students' educational experience.
