Using FEM in knowledge management: strategic analysis of triple-loop learning in a real case
An organisation’s ability to create difficult-to-imitate knowledge resources is a crucial capability in a dynamic environment. Such unique knowledge resources often stem from effective organisational learning processes, which are essential for organisations to adapt, innovate, and maintain a competitive edge. However, enterprises often lack sufficient tools to analyse their learning processes. In this study, we propose a new enterprise modelling (EM) method to diagnose organisational learning by combining the triple-loop learning model from KM with an EM technique, specifically the fractal enterprise model (FEM) technique. The proposed EM method provides modelling patterns that represent feedback loops at different levels of learning that can helps in diagnosing the effectiveness of organisational learning processes. This paper also presents the results of the practical application of this new method. Consequently, the research follows the design science research (DSR) methodology. From a theoretical perspective, the study introduces a new EM method in KM. Practically, the new method allows for diagnosing the state of organisational learning by detecting existing feedback learning loop patterns and deviations from them in a given business situation.
