Gendered Expectations: A Content Analysis on Gender Role Conditioning in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey
Gender roles refer to the societal norms and expectations that prescribe behaviours, attitudes, and responsibilities that are suitable for individuals based on their gender. These roles, often ingrained during early childhood, significantly influence how people perceive themselves and others, shaping their choices, relationships, and actions. The effects of gender roles are far-reaching, as they lead to societal inequalities, confining both men and women to rigid patterns that perpetuate traditional power structures and social hierarchies. The Malayalam film Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022) offers a compelling narrative that critiques these norms through its portrayal of gender role conditioning. This research paper, titled Gendered Expectations: A Content Analysis on Gender Role Conditioning through the Movie Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, delves into the societal expectations and limitations on gender roles depicted in the film. Employing a systematic and qualitative content analysis, the study explores how the movie sheds light on the impact of these gender roles on individuals, particularly highlighting the struggles and triumphs of the protagonist, Jaya, as she challenges conventional norms and asserts her autonomy. By analysing the film's themes and character arcs, this paper aims to provide insights into how gender role conditioning affects both men and women and emphasize the broader implications for achieving gender equality.
