Angewandte Chemie: One Journal, Many Faces
The authors of this Editorial now lead Angewandte Chemie and its editorial team as Editors-in-Chief and will continue to collaborate closely with the German Chemical Society as well as the journal's Scientific Advisory Committee and International Advisory Board in shaping the journal. The success of Angewandte Chemie as a premier platform for the publication of ground-breaking research across all areas of chemistry is to a large extent due to the excellent collaboration between the German Chemical Society (GDCh) as the owner society of Angewandte Chemie and the Wiley-VCH editorial team. Strategic decisions are made in the Angewandte Chemie Council, consisting of Katharina Landfester and Peter R. Schreiner as representatives of the GDCh Board, Annette G. Beck-Sickinger and Helma Wennemers as the Chairs of the journal's International Advisory Board and Scientific Advisory Committee, respectively, and Tom Kinzel as the GDCh Executive Director. We, the authors of this Editorial, are delighted to now lead Angewandte Chemie, and the wonderful team behind the journal, as Editors-in-Chief. We look forward to collaborating closely with the GDCh as well as the journal's boards. We will continue to shape the journal together with the four Executive Editors of Angewandte Chemie, Charlotte Gers-Panther, Theresa Kueckmann, Xin Su, and Suzanne Tobey. As the number of excellent chemistry journals continues to increase, it is essential that the journal attracts the best submissions. Charlotte Gers-Panther (brand development) and Theresa Kueckmann (overall strategy) provide valuable input that helps us further refine the journal's profile. Angewandte Chemie serves an increasingly larger, broader, and more international community, and in 2024 we published contributions from authors based in 68 countries. To ensure that the journal serves the needs of its community of researchers, we purposefully engage with and listen to all of the journal's potential authors, readers, and reviewers. These efforts, which include Angewandte Advances symposia, institute visits, and author workshops, are led by Xin Su and Suzanne Tobey as the regional representatives for Asia and the Americas, respectively. Xin and Suzanne are supported in their outreach activities by the Deputy Editors of the journal, Juty Chen, Haeryung Lee, Jeanette Loos, and Jing Tang, who are based in Canada, China, and South Korea. In addition, while most of our editors are still associated with our Weinheim (Germany) office, a number of colleagues are now based in China, India, and the UK, facilitating our interactions with the local chemistry communities. The globally distributed members of our International Advisory Board1 further act as our eyes and ears into the community and provide key advice. For example, the International Advisory Board supported the discontinuation of the color cost contributions and the print edition as implemented in 2024, as well as the possibility of transferring rejected manuscripts to the Wiley Advanced Materials journal family. The past year saw an unparalleled increase in submissions and, accordingly, in publications, which necessitated a significant expansion of the editorial team. Our editors continue to provide the best possible service to the Angewandte Chemie community through a fair, rigorous, and impartial peer review process that enables the selection of manuscripts of the highest quality for publication. As before, all of the journal's full-time in-house editors have a strong background in chemistry and related research areas and receive rigorous on-the-job training. Several of our new team members joined us from the Advanced Materials and Chemistry Europe families of journals, and most editors now work across several journals, facilitating, for example, transfers of rejected manuscripts to a suitable alternative venue. The in-house editorial team also evaluates proposals for review-type articles and opinion pieces such as Scientific Perspectives and Viewpoint Articles and deals with a significant number of appeals, ethical issues, and disputes between scientists. In solving these cases, the guidance and expertise of the members of the Scientific Advisory Committee2 is particularly valuable. They also work closely together with the leadership team in shaping the scientific profile of the journal and provide valuable insight based on their long-term experience as research-active scientists. The Scientific Advisory Committee will continue to support our efforts towards becoming an inclusive and equitable journal, maintaining the scientific excellence of Angewandte Chemie, and providing insight into newly developing fields.
