Analyzing digital safety practices and awareness among Indian youth: A Routine Activity Theory Perspective

The widespread availability of affordable smartphones and laptops and fostering technology integration into the curriculum have made it easier for students in India to access technology more frequently. Numerous research agencies have predicted that India is expected to have over 1.3 billion internet users by the year 2030. At this juncture, it is highly important to understand the youth's engagement with digital technology and media for assessing their digital literacy. Identifying gaps in their knowledge and skills can result in creating more efficient educational initiatives aimed at enhancing their ability to use digital tools safely and responsibly. Hence the present study focuses on exploring routine activities and analysing the pattern of technology adoption among the youth. It also unleashes the current level of guardianship available. This study has identified several noteworthy positive aspects. Firstly, a significant proportion of the respondents exhibit a personalized approach to managing their online presence, and they possess a valid reason to disconnect from the internet. Additionally, there is a relatively low incidence of cyberbullying reported among the participants, and the prevalent presence of parental control measures still exists among the youngsters. Moreover, the majority of the respondents display a willingness to engage in discussions regarding their online concerns with both their parents and teachers. This study also identifies adverse effects of technology among the participants, including disruptions to daily routines, passive user perceptions, and a rise in unsolicited, suspicious online communications, raising concerns about privacy and security, including online fraud and identity theft.
